HOW did this happen again? Aside from the Cubs playing more like Little Leaguers than the team with the best record in the NL this year, the best record in all of baseball for most of the year, & in first place in the division for most of the year?
This was supposed to be THEIR YEAR. 100 years & all that. It was a truly magical season & for the most part they did everything right all year (well, except for the games they lost). They won the division for the second straight year (yay!), & headed into the first round of the playoffs full of confidence, healthy & with “home field advantage”. Didn’t mean a damn thing. They completely unraveled & LOST those games, vs. being BEATEN by the Dodgers.
After they lost Game 2, I kept thinking of 1984, when they won the first two games & then when the series moved to San Diego, the Padres won the next 3. Could this happen again, but in reverse? After that unspeakably bad Game 2, it didn’t seem likely. And, it didn’t happen. Last night, the Dodgers BEAT the Cubs, with great pitching, hitting & defense. Of course, the Cubs wasted many chances for getting runs, but at least they didn’t LOSE the game by shoddy pitchy & worse fielding (how many errors in Game 2? 157? Seemed like). I honestly kept wondering if they were deliberately throwing the series, the play was that bad & so unlike this year’s team.
Oh, well. Wait ’til next year. (Third time’s the charm & all that).
